Seen in lateral view, the male temporal region forms a shallow concavity on the side of the calvaria, bounded superiorly by the temporal lines and inferiorly by the zygomatic arch as it bridges anteriorly toward the zygomatic bone. Anterior to the external acoustic meatus the root of the zygomatic arch and the preauricular contour mark the transition toward the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), while the temporal fossa sits deep to the scalp and temporalis muscle. Posteriorly, the surface contour trends toward the mastoid region of the temporal bone, with the petrous part lying deep and medial, not externally visible but anatomically adjacent to the ear and skull base. Palpation of this area matters in head and neck examination because subtle changes in the temple contour can reflect temporalis hypertrophy, atrophy, or hematoma, and the zygomatic arch provides a hard landmark when swelling obscures softer tissue. Needle placement and operative planning also depend on surface landmarks here: the superficial temporal artery courses anterior to the ear across the root of the zygomatic arch, and the frontotemporal branch of the facial nerve crosses the zygomatic arch within the superficial fascia, a known risk during preauricular or temporal incisions and facelift dissection. A practical landmark.
