Description
Running obliquely across the lateral abdominal wall, the external oblique forms the most superficial sheet, its fibers sweeping inferomedially from the lower ribs toward the iliac crest and linea alba. Deep to it, the internal oblique and transversus abdominis can be appreciated as distinct layers, with the transversus fibers coursing more horizontally and blending anteriorly into the rectus sheath. Superiorly, serratus anterior digitations interlock with the external oblique along the lateral rib cage, while intercostal muscles occupy the interspaces between the ribs; the deltoid caps the lateral shoulder at the top of the field. Layer recognition matters. This lateral perspective clarifies how the three broad muscle sheets contribute to the rectus sheath and the inguinal region, where variations in aponeurotic fibers influence the pathways of inguinal hernias and the planes encountered during abdominal wall incision.
