Description
Arising from the fused transverse processes, the sacral ala (wing) flares laterally from the sacral base and tapers inferiorly toward the apex, forming the lateral mass of the sacrum beside the sacral canal and median sacral crest. Across the sequence, the lateral surface rotates into view to emphasize the auricular surface for the ilium posteriorly and the adjacent sacral tuberosity, with the anterior pelvic surface and ala contour presented as a continuous bony sweep. Close attention is given to the superior margin near the promontory, where the ala blends with the body of S1, and to the relationship of the ala to the anterior sacral foramina, which lie medial to the wing. Clinically, the lateral sacrum is a landmark region for sacroiliac joint pain, pelvic ring instability, and safe corridors for sacral fixation. The animation clarifies how the irregular auricular surface and sacral tuberosity accept the strong interosseous and posterior sacroiliac ligaments, and why subtle variations in ala width can affect iliosacral screw trajectory. Motion adds teaching value here: rotating the bone and changing emphasis between anterior and posterior aspects makes it easier to correlate palpated landmarks with fluoroscopic inlet and outlet concepts used during pelvic trauma surgery. Use this animation in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal modules covering the axial skeleton and pelvis, and in orthopedic and radiology teaching files addressing sacroiliac dysfunction, sacral fractures (including Denis zone patterns), and preoperative planning for percutaneous iliosacral fixation. It also fits well as a short insert for medical publishing projects that need clear orientation of the sacral wing, auricular surface, and foraminal layout in relation to the pelvic brim.
