Description
Positioned in the right upper quadrant of a male child’s torso, the gallbladder sits in the gallbladder fossa on the visceral (inferior) surface of the liver, typically adjacent to the junction of the right and left hepatic lobes near the quadrate lobe. Its fundus projects anteroinferiorly toward the anterior abdominal wall, while the body and neck course posterosuperiorly toward the porta hepatis. Intrahepatic biliary radicals converge into the right and left hepatic ducts, which join to form the common hepatic duct; the cystic duct exits the gallbladder neck and meets the common hepatic duct to create the common bile duct. For teaching pediatric abdominal anatomy, this semi-transparent torso view clarifies how bile drainage is organized from the hepatic parenchyma into the extrahepatic biliary tree, and why small positional changes can matter when you are trying to localize pathology. Gallbladder inflammation (acute cholecystitis) is less common in children than adults but does occur, often in the setting of hemolytic disease or prolonged fasting, and the relationship of the fundus to the right costal margin underpins the surface landmarking used in clinical examination.
