Description

Arising from incomplete development of one Müllerian duct, the unicornuate uterus appears as a laterally deviated, banana shaped uterine body with a single dominant horn, a tapered fundus, and an endometrial cavity that is elongated but small in volume. The animation tracks the asymmetric uterine contour from fundus to cervix, clarifying how the myometrium and endometrium wrap an eccentrically positioned cavity. As the view rotates, a contralateral rudimentary horn may be implied, and when present it sits inferolateral to the main uterine horn and may be noncommunicating with the cervical canal. Orientation cues emphasize that the uterine apex is superior, the cervix inferior, and the patent hemiuterus displaced toward one pelvic side. Clinical relevance centers on reproductive outcomes and surgical planning. Limited cavity capacity and altered uterine geometry correlate with recurrent pregnancy loss, malpresentation, preterm birth, and fetal growth restriction, while a noncommunicating rudimentary horn can present with hematometra, endometriosis from retrograde menstruation, or dangerous rudimentary horn pregnancy with risk of rupture in the second trimester. Animated sequencing helps learners grasp why hysterosalpingography may show a single, narrow, curved cavity, why MRI delineates the myometrial contour and any rudimentary horn, and how the cervix may remain single despite asymmetric uterine development. Small uterus. Big consequences. Use this animation in reproductive anatomy and embryology modules covering Müllerian anomalies, in radiology teaching files pairing HSG and pelvic MRI with congenital uterine variants, or in patient education content for infertility and recurrent miscarriage clinics. It also supports preoperative counseling and operative planning when laparoscopic excision of a symptomatic rudimentary horn is considered. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
