Description
Rendered as a left lateral profile of an adult Black woman, the large intestine is superimposed within the abdominopelvic cavity to clarify surface anatomy. The ascending colon tracks superiorly along the patient’s right lateral abdomen toward the hepatic flexure, the transverse colon crosses anterior to the small-bowel mesentery toward the splenic flexure, and the descending colon runs inferiorly along the left flank. Inferiorly, the sigmoid colon curves medially into the pelvis to continue as the rectum, positioned posterior to the urinary bladder and anterior to the sacrum. A side profile is the cleanest way to teach the colon’s general topography against external landmarks such as the costal margin, iliac crest, and pubic region without the visual noise of an open abdominal wall. This orientation also maps well to clinical pain patterns and exam findings: right lower quadrant tenderness near the cecal pole in acute appendicitis, left lower quadrant pain in sigmoid diverticulitis, and distension patterns seen with large-bowel obstruction, including a competent ileocecal valve with cecal blowout risk. Endoscopists and surgeons think in these bends and transitions. The flexures and sigmoid loop are where looping, sharp angulation, and fixation points commonly affect colonoscopy technique and surgical mobilization (white line of Toldt along the ascending and descending colon). Useful for undergraduate gross anatomy and GI physiology teaching, patient-facing explanations of constipation, diverticular disease, and colorectal cancer screening, or as a locator graphic in radiology and endoscopy handouts that pair with CT abdomen or barium enema discussions.
