Description
Frontal squama occupies the superior anterior cranium and forms the bony forehead above the orbital roofs. From an anterior perspective, the broad convex plate rises superiorly from the supraorbital margins and superciliary arches, meeting the paired parietal bones at the coronal suture along its superior border. Midline relief around the glabella and nasion sits inferior to the frontal eminences, while the temporal lines curve superolaterally toward the frontozygomatic region and anterior part of the temporal fossa. Surface topography is the point. Frontal squama anatomy matters whenever you need reliable landmarks for trauma assessment, sinus surgery, and craniofacial approaches: fractures often propagate across the anterior table of the frontal sinus or toward the supraorbital rim, and small step-offs around the glabella can signal deeper involvement of the anterior cranial fossa. Attention to the supraorbital notch or foramen is clinically practical because it transmits the supraorbital neurovascular bundle, a frequent target for regional anesthesia in laceration repair, brow procedures, and endoscopic forehead work. The fixed anterior viewpoint also supports teaching of sutural relationships and palpable landmarks, which translate directly to physical examination and to planning a bicoronal incision or frontal craniotomy flap.
