Description
Centered on the hypogastric (suprapubic) region of the anterior abdominal wall, the highlighted field lies inferior to the umbilical region and superior to the pubic symphysis, spanning between the right and left inguinal regions. In this adult Black male figure, the overlay corresponds to the midline lower abdominal contour where the urinary bladder sits posterior to the rectus abdominis and deep to the transversalis fascia. Deep within the lesser pelvis, the prostate is positioned inferior to the bladder base and anterior to the rectum, encircling the proximal urethra just distal to the internal urethral orifice. Clear topography. Surface anatomy of the hypogastrium matters because it is the access zone and pain referral area for several common urologic problems. A distended bladder rises superiorly out of the pelvis into the hypogastric region, which is why suprapubic tenderness and a palpable midline mass guide bedside assessment of acute urinary retention and inform safe placement of a suprapubic catheter above the pubic symphysis.
