Description
Presented in lateral profile, the female head and neck are sectioned to orient the cranial contents to the facial and cervical viscera. Cranially, the cerebral hemispheres occupy the vault superior to the petrous temporal bone, while the brainstem descends toward the foramen magnum and upper cervical spine. Anterior and inferior to the cranial base, the nasal cavity and oral cavity lead into the pharynx, with the larynx and trachea continuing inferiorly, and the thyroid gland lying anterolateral to the upper trachea. Superficial and deep planes are overlaid with major nerves (yellow), arteries and veins (red and blue), and lymphatic vessels and nodes (green) arranged around the mandible, parotid region, carotid sheath, and posterior triangle. Lateral orientation matters because it tracks real procedural corridors and symptom patterns. The carotid bifurcation and internal carotid course sit anterior to the cervical vertebrae and deep to the sternocleidomastoid, the same neighborhood dissected during carotid endarterectomy and vulnerable in penetrating neck trauma. Nearby, the hypoglossal nerve crossing the carotid vessels and the vagus nerve within the sheath are common at-risk structures, and the illustration’s nodal chains parallel typical metastatic spread from oral cavity, pharyngeal, and thyroid malignancies to submandibular and deep cervical nodes.
