Description
Centered within the abdominal cavity of an adult Asian woman in anatomical position, the small intestine forms a dense, coiled mass suspended from the posterior abdominal wall by the mesentery. Proximally, the duodenum begins just inferior to the stomach and curves in a C shape around the head of the pancreas before continuing as jejunum and ileum. Jejunal loops tend to occupy the left upper and central abdomen, while ileal loops more often descend toward the right lower quadrant, approaching the ileocecal junction deep to the anterior abdominal wall.
