Rendered in lateral profile, the arterial tree of the head and upper neck is traced from the common carotid artery as it ascends within the carotid sheath and bifurcates into the internal and external carotid arteries near the angle of the mandible. Superficial branches of the external carotid, including the facial artery as it crosses the inferior border of the mandible anterior to the masseter and the superficial temporal artery anterior to the auricle, course anteriorly and superiorly across the face and scalp. Deep to the cranial vault, cerebral vessels are suggested as a dense arborization, consistent with the intracranial distribution supplied predominantly by the internal carotid system. Orientation stays faithful to surface landmarks. Lateral head vascular anatomy matters because many high-risk pathologies declare themselves at or near these named segments: atherosclerotic narrowing at the carotid bifurcation, embolic stroke from internal carotid plaque, and iatrogenic bleeding during neck dissection or carotid endarterectomy when the external carotid and its branches are mobilized. Palpation and ultrasound localization of the superficial temporal artery are routine when evaluating suspected giant cell arteritis, and the facial artery’s tortuous course explains why lacerations along the mandibular margin can bleed briskly. These are practical vessels.
