Description
Posterior anatomy frames the upper gastrointestinal tract with the liver occupying the right upper quadrant (patient’s right, viewer’s left in a true posterior orientation), the stomach lying superior and leftward, and the distal esophagus entering the gastric cardia near the midline. Inferior to the liver, the gallbladder sits on the visceral surface, while the pancreas spans transversely behind the stomach, its head nestled into the C loop of the duodenum. Below, jejunal and ileal loops fill the central abdomen, and the large intestine forms a peripheral collar from ascending colon to transverse and descending segments, continuing into the sigmoid colon and rectum inferiorly. Clear relationships. Easy to teach. This posterior perspective helps learners think in three dimensions about retroperitoneal versus intraperitoneal positioning, a point that matters when interpreting posterior abdominal pain patterns and cross-sectional imaging. It also mirrors the operative logic of mobilization planes: appreciating the posterior relations of stomach and pancreas supports discussions of pancreatitis with referred back pain, posterior gastric ulcer penetration, and access routes used in distal pancreatectomy or left-sided colectomy where the mesocolon and pancreas can intersect as surgical neighbors. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and GI blocks to reinforce organ laterality and segmental continuity from esophagus to rectum, and in radiology teaching files when correlating a posterior mental model with axial CT or MRI. It also fits well in patient education materials and public health publications needing inclusive representation of a Black adult female body while maintaining strict anatomical fidelity. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
