Description
Centered just inferior to the clavicle, the infraclavicular (subclavicular) fossa forms a shallow depression between the anterior border of the deltoid laterally and the superior fibers of pectoralis major medially, with the deltopectoral groove running toward the axilla. Beneath the skin, the contour is shaped by the clavicle and its subclavius muscle, the clavipectoral fascia, and the anterior thoracic wall, with the coracoid process lying deep and lateral as a palpable bony landmark. The standing, arms-slightly-abducted pose keeps the shoulder girdle in a neutral position, so the surface anatomy of the upper anterior thorax reads clearly in anatomical position. Clinically, this surface depression guides infraclavicular access routes and implant placement: the deltopectoral interval is used for pacemaker and ICD pockets and for cephalic vein cutdown, while adjacent landmarking is used for subclavian or axillary venous cannulation (with attention to the pleural dome and first rib deep to the medial clavicle). Needle angle and entry site matter. It is also a practical teaching landmark for the thoracoacromial vessels and the lateral pectoral nerve as they traverse the clavipectoral fascia, and for orienting learners to where the cords of the brachial plexus and axillary artery sit deep to pectoralis minor.
