Description
Centered on the midface, the infraorbital region is mapped on a Black adult female with bilateral surface markings placed inferior to the lower eyelids along the anterior maxilla. The bands lie just inferior to the infraorbital margin, crossing the malar (zygomatic) prominence laterally and converging medially toward the lateral nasal wall and nasojugal fold. Beneath this skin territory, the infraorbital foramen and canal transmit the infraorbital nerve (V2), artery, and vein, which emerge to supply sensation and vascularity to the lower eyelid, lateral nose, upper lip, and anterior cheek (buccal region). Symmetry matters here. Clinically, this corridor is where palpation and landmarking guide an infraorbital nerve block for maxillary incisors, canine procedures, and laceration repair of the upper lip and nasal ala. The same anatomy becomes unforgiving in midface trauma: blowout fractures and zygomaticomaxillary complex injuries often produce infraorbital hypoesthesia from neuropraxia or entrapment at the infraorbital groove and foramen. Soft tissue work in the cheek, including filler placement in the tear trough or malar region, also risks intravascular injection through infraorbital branches, so a clear sense of the foramen’s typical position relative to the infraorbital rim and midpupillary line is a practical safety check. Use this rendering in head and neck anatomy teaching to connect maxillary surface landmarks with the underlying V2 distribution, or in clinical skills sessions for regional anesthesia, facial trauma assessment, and documentation of sensory deficits. It also fits well in dermatology, plastic surgery, and oral and maxillofacial publications where skin of color representation and accurate midface topography support patient education and procedural planning.
