Its muscle belly and tendon slips track superiorly from upper thoracic transverse processes toward the transverse processes of C2 through C6, lying posterior to the cervical facet (zygapophysial) joints. Superficially, you would expect splenius cervicis and the more lateral levator scapulae to overlap this compartment, while the occipital bone and mandibular ramus frame the superior bony context in a lateral neck view. Orientation is clear.
