Description
Framed in lateral profile, the adult male temporal region is defined by the shallow temporal fossa bounded superiorly by the superior temporal line and centered over the pterion, where the frontal, parietal, squamous temporal, and greater wing of the sphenoid meet. Superficial landmarks include the zygomatic arch coursing anterior to posterior inferior to the fossa, with the auricle lying posteroinferiorly and the lateral orbital rim positioned anteromedially. The soft tissue contour overlies the temporalis muscle and its fascia, with the frontozygomatic area anteriorly and the squamous temporal bone forming the bony platform deep to the skin. Clinically, the pterion matters because it sits over the anterior division of the middle meningeal artery, and a blow here can produce an epidural hematoma with rapid neurological deterioration. A short distance anterior to the ear, the superficial temporal artery and the auriculotemporal nerve travel within the scalp, a key relationship for temporal artery biopsy in suspected giant cell arteritis and for avoiding iatrogenic injury during preauricular or temporal incisions.
