Description
Oblique left lateral view of the head and upper neck centers on the mastoid region of the temporal bone, with the mastoid process palpable posterior and inferior to the auricle and just posterior to the external acoustic meatus. The postauricular sulcus overlies the attachment zone where the sternocleidomastoid runs inferiorly toward the manubrium and clavicle, while the posterior belly of digastric would originate more anteromedially at the mastoid notch. Superiorly, the temporal squama and root of the zygomatic arch frame the side of the cranium, and posteriorly the contour trends toward the occipitomastoid region at the skull base. Clinically, this surface anatomy matters whenever infection or surgery brings you behind the ear. Acute otitis media can extend into mastoid air cells, producing mastoiditis with postauricular tenderness, erythema, and outward displacement of the pinna, a bedside finding that follows the bony anatomy shown here. During cortical mastoidectomy or postauricular approaches to the middle ear, the mastoid cortex is opened while staying oriented to deeper hazards such as the facial nerve in the fallopian canal, the sigmoid sinus posteriorly, and the mastoid emissary vein near the occipitomastoid suture. Landmarks matter. Use this asset for teaching temporal bone and head and neck surface anatomy in medical, PA, and nursing curricula, or to illustrate otologic pathways in textbooks, patient education materials, and surgical consent documents where representation of a Black female patient improves demographic realism. It also fits radiology and ENT lectures when correlating external landmarks with CT of the temporal bone and mastoid air cell disease. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
