Description

Rendered in natural color on a Black woman’s head and shoulders, the external nose is presented with the overlying soft tissues intact while the internal nasal passages are selectively highlighted in transparent blue. The nasal cavity extends posteriorly from the nares and vestibule toward the choanae, partitioned in the midline by the nasal septum (septal cartilage anteriorly, vomer and perpendicular plate of the ethmoid more posteriorly). Along the lateral wall, the inferior, middle, and superior nasal conchae project medially over their corresponding meatuses, with the paranasal sinus region suggested superiorly and laterally relative to the nasal bridge and medial orbits. Surface landmarks remain readable. Clinically, this view clarifies where airflow conditioning and mucociliary clearance actually occur, and why minor mucosal edema can obstruct drainage pathways concentrated around the middle meatus and ostiomeatal complex. It also supports patient and trainee understanding of common rhinology problems, including deviated septum, hypertrophy of the inferior turbinate in allergic rhinitis, and the anatomic basis of chronic rhinosinusitis when sinus ostia are narrowed. Simple anatomy. The relationship of septum and turbinates is also directly relevant to septoplasty, turbinate reduction, and safe endoscopic corridors. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and ENT modules when teaching the facies and nasal cavity, in board-style review figures explaining sinus drainage and endoscopic sinus surgery landmarks, or in patient-facing education for nasal obstruction and sinusitis.
