Description
Centered in the cranial base, the sphenoid bone is highlighted against the surrounding calvaria and adjacent skull base, with the greater wings spreading laterally and the lesser wings projecting anteriorly toward the frontal region. Posterior to the body of the sphenoid, the dorsum sellae rises as the posterior boundary of the hypophyseal fossa, while the pterygoid processes descend inferiorly, ending in the medial and lateral pterygoid plates near the posterior hard palate. Along the greater wing, the expected foramina sit in sequence, foramen rotundum anteromedial to foramen ovale, with foramen spinosum posterolateral, all oriented toward the infratemporal fossa.
