Description
Distal tibial plafond dominates the frame, with its concave inferior articular surface oriented toward the talar trochlea to form the superior component of the tibiotalar (ankle) joint. Medially, the articular extension onto the medial malleolus is continuous with the plafond, while laterally the tibial margin approaches the fibular notch (incisura fibularis) that helps define the ankle mortise. The articular surface appears bounded by a sharper metaphyseal rim, with the central concavity and peripheral contours emphasized for joint congruence. Bone landmarks are easy to localize. Ankle plafond anatomy matters when you are thinking about load transmission and post-traumatic arthritis, because compressive forces from the talus concentrate across this tibial surface and any incongruity after injury quickly becomes symptomatic. Pilon fractures (tibial plafond fractures) often involve impaction and comminution of the inferior articular surface, and this perspective supports preoperative planning discussions around articular reduction, restoration of the mortise, and later alignment of the distal tibia.
