Description
Body of the lateral ventricle occupies the central supratentorial cavity immediately superior to the thalamus, extending anteroposteriorly between the frontal horn and the atrium (trigone). Along its roof, the corpus callosum forms a smooth superior boundary, while the septum pellucidum defines the medial wall separating it from the contralateral ventricle. Laterally, the head and body of the caudate nucleus contour the ventricular wall, and the floor is shaped by the dorsal surface of the thalamus with the stria terminalis and thalamostriate vein tracing the caudothalamic groove at their interface. Choroid plexus tissue is typically evident along the medial floor where the tela choroidea attaches. These relationships matter because the body of the lateral ventricle serves as a reference space in neuroimaging and neurosurgery, where small shifts in its contour can signal mass effect, midline shift, or early hydrocephalus. Ventriculomegaly from normal pressure hydrocephalus and disproportionate enlargement after intraventricular hemorrhage are both assessed by appreciating the ventricle’s roof, floor, and medial septal boundary in a single static frame. The proximity of the caudate nucleus, thalamus, and deep venous structures also frames clinical discussions of periventricular infarcts, caudothalamic groove hemorrhage in neonates, and safe trajectories for ventricular access.
