Description
Prominent in a ventral midbrain view, the paired crus cerebri (basis pedunculi) form thick, longitudinal white matter bundles on the anterior surface of the cerebral peduncles, separated by the interpeduncular fossa along the midline. The animation tracks their superior continuity with descending fibers from the cerebral hemispheres and their inferior course into the ventral pons, while the oculomotor nerve (CN III) emerges from the medial aspect of each peduncle within the interpeduncular cistern. As the sequence advances, the crus is distinguished from the more dorsal tegmentum across the plane of the substantia nigra, clarifying what belongs to the motor outflow corridor versus the sensory and reticular systems behind it. Clinically, this is the territory of Weber syndrome, where a ventromedial midbrain infarct can produce ipsilateral CN III palsy with contralateral hemiparesis from corticospinal tract involvement in the crus. Vascular relationships read clearly when the view stays ventral: penetrating branches from the posterior cerebral artery and basilar apex supply these deep structures, and small lesions here have outsized motor consequences.
