Posteriorly oriented views of the male temporal region bring the squamous part of the temporal bone into relief as it curves laterally from the parietal bone toward the zygomatic arch. Superiorly, the parietal eminence transitions into the posterolateral skull where the temporal lines can be appreciated as shallow ridges tracking anteroinferiorly toward the temple. Inferiorly, the mastoid process sits posterior to the external acoustic meatus, while the superior nuchal line and occipital curvature frame the posterior cranial contour medially. Surface contours in this area approximate the deeper sutural neighborhood of the pterion anteriorly, where frontal, parietal, temporal, and sphenoid bones converge. Posterior perspectives matter because the temple is a thin bony corridor with outsized consequences in trauma. In a blow to the lateral head, fractures propagating toward the pterion can lacerate the anterior branch of the middle meningeal artery deep to the temporal bone and lead to an epidural hematoma with a classic lucid interval. Surgical planning also benefits from accurate surface anatomy here, since temporalis muscle origin along the temporal lines and its fascia define dissection planes during pterional craniotomy and other frontotemporal approaches.
