Description
From the lateral profile of the adult male thorax, the superficial contour of the rib cage is defined by palpable ribs and intercostal spaces curving from the anterior costal cartilages toward the posterior angles near the thoracic spine. Superiorly, the manubrium and clavicular region transition into the supraclavicular fossa and shoulder girdle, while inferiorly the costal margin slopes toward the infrasternal region and upper abdominal wall. Posterior landmarks include the scapular outline overlying ribs 2 to 7, with the inferior angle of the scapula sitting above the lower thoracic cage. Skin surface anatomy dominates, but the underlying sternum, pectoralis major anteriorly, and latissimus dorsi posterolaterally are implied by the silhouette. Clear sidewall geometry. Lateral thoracic surface landmarks matter when you need a reliable map for auscultation, pleural procedures, and trauma assessment, because rib number and intercostal space selection changes as you move from the parasternal line to the midaxillary and posterior axillary lines. Needle thoracostomy and chest tube placement rely on staying just superior to the rib to avoid the intercostal neurovascular bundle that runs along the inferior costal groove, and the safe triangle is judged partly from the lateral chest wall and axillary folds. Rib fracture pain and flail segments also declare themselves along the lateral arcs, where bending moments peak and palpation tracks the affected costal levels. Use this lateral male thorax view for gross anatomy teaching on thoracic wall surface anatomy, for clinical skills manuals covering respiratory examination and pleural access, and for patient education materials that need clear rib and chest wall orientation without internal organs.
