Digit II lies immediately lateral to the great toe, its phalanges parallel but slimmer, emphasizing the interdigital interval and the relative breadth of the hallux. This medial aspect is the view clinicians reach for when teaching hallux valgus mechanics, because the apparent alignment of the proximal phalanx relative to the first metatarsal and the crowding of digit II are the outward clues to first-ray malalignment and bunion formation.
