Description

Arising from the superior aspect of the proximal tibia, the medial intercondylar tubercle projects upward from the intercondylar eminence between the medial and lateral tibial plateaus. The animation isolates the tibial head and sweeps through subtle rotations to clarify how this taller medial peak sits medial to the lateral intercondylar tubercle and just distal to the femoral intercondylar notch in anatomic position. As the tibia turns, the viewer can track the transition from the relatively flat articular surfaces of the tibial plateau to the central nonarticular intercondylar region. Orientation to the intercondylar eminence matters in any discussion of tibial plateau fractures and avulsion injuries involving the cruciate ligaments, because the ACL and PCL insert into the intercondylar area immediately anterior and posterior to these tubercles. Arthroscopic and open procedures around the tibial spine depend on clear mental mapping of the eminence relative to the anterior horn of the menisci and to the slope of the plateau. Motion helps here: rotating the bone in sequence makes it easier to appreciate why small changes in viewing angle can obscure the tubercle on radiographs and can change the perceived displacement of tibial spine fractures. Use this animation in knee anatomy teaching for gross anatomy and musculoskeletal modules, in orthopedic lecture decks covering tibial spine and tibial plateau injury patterns, or as a quick orientation clip for surgical education around ACL reconstruction tibial tunnel placement. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
