Description
Arcing between the right and left superior cerebellar peduncles, the superior medullary velum forms a thin sheet of white matter that roofs the superior part of the fourth ventricle and completes the anterior aspect of the cerebellar roof. As the animation progresses, the cerebellar hemispheres and vermis provide posterior context while the peduncles converge superiorly toward the midbrain, clarifying how the velum spans the interpeduncular gap. Deep to this lamina, the superior medullary velum relates to the cerebellar white matter (arbor vitae) and the ventricular ependymal surface of the fourth ventricle. Small structure, high payoff. Clinically, this is a key landmark when teaching hindbrain and ventricular anatomy, because its position explains how lesions that distort the fourth ventricle can secondarily stretch the superior cerebellar peduncles and alter cerebellar outflow pathways. The sequence is also helpful for correlating with axial and sagittal neuroimaging, where the superior medullary velum can be subtle, and for orienting discussions of dorsal brainstem approaches that traverse the cerebellomedullary fissure to access the fourth ventricle without excessive cerebellar retraction. Motion clarifies what static plates often blur: the difference between the peduncular walls and the velar roof as the camera tracks from cerebellar surface to internal ventricular relationships. Use this animation in neuroanatomy and neuroscience courses covering the cerebellum, fourth ventricle, and brainstem corridors, or in surgical education modules introducing posterior fossa anatomy and safe trajectories to intraventricular pathology. It also fits well in radiology teaching files that pair 3D anatomy with MRI/CT ventricular landmarks for residents. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
