Description
Framed on the adult male torso, the thoracic region is defined externally from the clavicular level and suprasternal (jugular) notch superiorly down to the costal margin and xiphisternal junction inferiorly, with the anterior median plane marked by the sternal body. Laterally, the thoracic wall contours over the ribs and intercostal spaces toward the anterior axillary line and midaxillary line, where the transition to the upper limb occurs at the axillary fold. Superficial landmarks of the pectoral region are implied, including the position of the nipple and areola overlying the anterior thoracic wall and the underlying pectoralis major. Regional boundary mapping in the thorax matters because so many clinical descriptions, exam findings, and procedures rely on surface anatomy rather than direct visualization of deeper structures. Palpation of the sternal angle (Angle of Louis) guides rib counting to locate intercostal spaces for auscultation, chest tube placement, or needle decompression, and the inferior boundary at the costal margin helps orient abdominal versus thoracic pain patterns. Clear thoracic limits also anchor documentation of chest wall trauma, pectus deformities, and postoperative incisions such as median sternotomy or inframammary approaches.
