Description
Anteriorly, the female neck (collum) is organized around the midline airway and visceral column, with the hyoid bone superiorly, the thyroid cartilage and cricoid cartilage stacked inferiorly, and the trachea descending toward the thoracic inlet. Suprahyoid and infrahyoid (strap) muscles lie superficial to the larynx and thyroid gland, while the sternocleidomastoid forms the lateral boundary of the anterior cervical triangle on each side. Medial structures cluster along the midline, whereas the carotid sheath contents sit deeper and more lateral, bordered by the sternohyoid, sternothyroid, and the superior belly of the omohyoid as the anterior triangle subdivides into submental, submandibular, carotid, and muscular triangles. Surface anatomy in this anterior cervical view matters because common bedside and operative landmarks align in a predictable vertical sequence: hyoid, thyroid notch, cricothyroid membrane, cricoid, then tracheal rings.
