Description
Arising from the maxilla and blending into the lateral nasal cartilage and alar skin, the anterior dilator naris is presented as the superficial, anterior portion of the nasalis complex at the forward margin of the nostril (naris). In profile, its fibers lie anterior to the transverse part of the nasalis and sit inferior to the nasal bones, immediately lateral to the nasal dorsum and medial to the nasolabial fold. Surrounding facial musculature is also visible, including orbicularis oculi superiorly, the masseter over the mandibular ramus posteriorly, and the platysma coursing in the anterolateral neck. Fiber direction reads clearly. Functionally, this small slip matters because it influences external nasal valve caliber during inspiration by resisting collapse of the ala, a point that becomes clinically concrete in patients with alar rim collapse, post-rhinoplasty stenosis, or facial nerve dysfunction affecting nasal flaring. The profile perspective helps separate the anterior dilator naris from adjacent elevators and depressors of the upper lip and ala (for example levator labii superioris alaeque nasi), which can otherwise blur together in frontal views. A tight landmark for teaching surface anatomy.
