Description
Seen in lateral profile, the upper limb is oriented in anatomical position with the brachium (arm) bounded superiorly by the deltoid region at the shoulder and inferiorly by the antecubital region at the elbow. Anteriorly, the contour corresponds to the biceps brachii and brachialis overlying the anterior surface of the humerus, while posteriorly the triceps brachii occupies the extensor compartment and is highlighted to mark the posterior boundary. Along the lateral aspect, the groove between biceps and triceps indicates the lateral intermuscular septum and the plane where superficial veins and cutaneous nerves travel. Clear surface anatomy. Regional boundaries of the anterior arm matter when you are teaching compartments and when you are planning safe corridors for injections, incisions, or fracture fixation. The triceps highlight is a useful reminder that humeral shaft fractures and posterior surgical approaches place the radial nerve at risk as it courses in the radial (spiral) groove before piercing the lateral intermuscular septum to enter the anterior compartment.
