Description
Anterior soft tissues of the female genu are presented in frontal perspective, centered on the patella seated within the quadriceps tendon and aligned over the trochlear surface of the distal femur. Medial and lateral parapatellar regions frame the patellar facets, with the medial and lateral femoral condyles flanking the joint line superior to the tibial plateau. Inferiorly, the patellar ligament (tendon) descends to the tibial tuberosity, bordering the infrapatellar (Hoffa) fat pad and the anterior tibial surface; the fibular head sits laterally as a distal landmark. Clear surface anatomy. This anterior view matters when you need to communicate patellofemoral versus tibiofemoral contributions to anterior knee pain, because it places the patella, patellar tendon, and peri-patellar recesses in one plane and makes lateral maltracking easier to explain than in an oblique or posterior study. Clinically, tenderness at the inferior pole of the patella and thickening along the patellar tendon support patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee), while swelling above the patella tracks with suprapatellar recess effusion and can accompany acute internal derangement such as an ACL tear. The medial and lateral retinacular contours also anchor discussions of lateral release, MPFL reconstruction planning, and patellar instability assessment. Use this plate in gross anatomy and MSK modules to teach anterior knee surface landmarks, in sports medicine and orthopaedic texts to orient readers before moving to MRI or arthroscopy views, or in patient education materials describing patellofemoral pain syndrome, prepatellar bursitis, and anterior knee injection approach landmarks.
