Description
Centered on the anterior arch of the atlas (C1), the sequence isolates the anterior tubercle as a midline prominence on the ventral surface of the ring. Lateral to it, the arch curves toward the bulky lateral masses, where the superior articular facets face superomedially toward the occipital condyles and the inferior facets orient inferomedially toward C2. As the camera holds an anterior view, subtle rotational and zoom steps clarify how the anterior arch sits anterior to the vertebral foramen and how the lateral masses project slightly laterally beyond the arch. The transverse processes and their foramina appear more laterally, framing the anterior midline landmark. Clinically, the anterior tubercle matters as a palpable and radiographic reference for C1 orientation in cervical trauma and for distinguishing atlas from subaxial vertebrae on plain films and CT. The animated progression makes the ring geometry intuitive, highlighting why Jefferson burst fractures propagate through the anterior and posterior arches rather than through a vertebral body, and how lateral mass displacement can be inferred when the arch contour is disrupted. It also reinforces the relationship of C1 to the atlanto-occipital and atlanto-axial joints, where instability can follow ligamentous injury. Use this animation in gross anatomy and head and neck modules when introducing atypical cervical vertebrae, and in radiology teaching files to support pattern recognition on trauma CT and open-mouth odontoid series. It also fits surgical education around posterior C1 ring anatomy by grounding learners in the anterior landmark before discussing fixation corridors. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
