Description
Oriented in anatomical position, the highlighted anterolateral thoracic wall spans inferior to the clavicles and suprasternal notch, across the pectoral region overlying the sternum and costal cartilages, then laterally toward the anterior axillary line. Superficially, the contour follows the mammary region and the fibers of pectoralis major as they converge laterally toward the humerus, with the deltopectoral groove marking the transition into the shoulder. Deeper layers implied by the surface topography include pectoralis minor deep to pectoralis major, serratus anterior over the lateral ribs, and the intercostal spaces between adjacent ribs. Placement of ECG precordial leads (V1 to V6) relies on accurate identification of intercostal spaces along the sternum and midclavicular line, and miscounting ribs shifts leads enough to distort ST segment interpretation.
