Description
Proximal phalanx body (shaft) of a toe is presented from an inferior (plantar) viewpoint, emphasizing the elongated diaphysis between the proximal base and distal head. The plantar surface reads as a gently concave to flattened bony field, bordered by sharper medial and lateral margins that transition into the more rounded dorsal contour at the edges of the frame. Proximally, the shaft widens toward the base that will articulate with the corresponding metatarsal head at the metatarsophalangeal joint, while distally it narrows toward the head that meets the middle phalanx at the proximal interphalangeal joint. Fine cortical texture helps distinguish the nonarticular shaft from the smoother periarticular regions near each end. Plantar anatomy of the toe phalanges matters because this is where load, tendon pull, and plantar plate forces converge during push-off, and small disruptions of the shaft often alter toe alignment and gait mechanics. Fractures of the proximal phalanx, commonly from stubbing or crush injuries, are assessed for plantar cortical angulation and rotational malalignment, which can drive painful callus formation under the forefoot. The inferior perspective also supports teaching tendon mechanics by orienting the viewer to where the flexor digitorum longus and flexor digitorum brevis courses relate to the plantar aspect of the phalangeal shaft and its adjacent joint surfaces.
