On the lateral frontal convexity, areas typically labeled around the inferior frontal gyrus (BA 44 and 45) sit anteroinferior to the precentral region (BA 4) and anterior to premotor territories (BA 6), while dorsolateral prefrontal fields (BA 9, 46) extend superiorly toward the frontal pole (BA 10). Inferiorly, orbitofrontal cortex (BA 11 and 12) wraps along the basal frontal surface, and the temporal pole (BA 38) appears inferolateral to the frontal pole, bordering anterior temporal association cortex (commonly BA 20, 21, 22 depending on the map convention). Sulcal landmarks, including the lateral (Sylvian) fissure region, help orient the frontal operculum against anterior temporal cortex. Clinically, this mapping matters because many bedside syndromes and operative plans are still discussed in Brodmann terms, even when modern parcellations are available. Broca aphasia localizes to dominant-hemisphere BA 44/45 near the inferior frontal gyrus, orbitofrontal injuries (BA 11/12) correlate with disinhibition and impaired decision-making, and frontotemporal dementia patterns often start in anterior temporal and orbitofrontal networks. The fixed anterior perspective makes hemispheric symmetry, frontal pole labeling, and the relationship of inferior frontal cortex to the temporal pole easy to communicate without mixing planes.
