Deep to this muscular boundary, the carotid sheath region is the expected focus, with the common carotid artery ascending to its bifurcation into internal and external carotid arteries at the level of the upper thyroid cartilage. Medial to the sheath lie the larynx and pharyngeal wall, while the infrahyoid strap muscles (including sternohyoid and sternothyroid) form a more anterior, inferior layer toward the midline.
