Description
Centered on the anterior wrists (carpal region) of an adult Black woman in anatomical position, the render places the distal radius lateral and the distal ulna medial, with the radiocarpal joint line spanning toward the scaphoid and lunate. Superficial landmarks include the palmar creases, the thenar and hypothenar eminences, and the midline course of the palmaris longus tendon when present, flanked by flexor carpi radialis laterally and flexor carpi ulnaris medially. Deep to the skin, the flexor retinaculum bridges from the scaphoid tubercle and trapezium to the pisiform and hook of hamate, forming the roof of the carpal tunnel. Forearm flexor tendons converge distally toward their digital insertions. Clear proportions. An anterior, palms-forward presentation is the most practical way to teach and communicate palmar wrist anatomy because it aligns with bedside examination and common incision planning. Median nerve compression in carpal tunnel syndrome is best understood relative to the flexor retinaculum and the crowded contents beneath it (flexor digitorum superficialis and profundus tendons and flexor pollicis longus), and this view also supports explanation of provocative maneuvers such as Phalen and Tinel at the volar wrist. Radiocarpal pain patterns, scaphoid tenderness at the anatomic snuffbox (lateral wrist), and volar ganglion cyst locations are easier to localize when the distal radius, carpal rows, and palmar soft tissues are oriented consistently.
