Description

Beginning on the superolateral surface of the cerebral hemisphere, the central sulcus (sulcus centralis, sulcus of Rolando) is traced as it descends inferoanteriorly from the superior margin toward the lateral sulcus, separating the frontal lobe anteriorly from the parietal lobe posteriorly. Along its anterior bank sits the precentral gyrus (primary motor cortex), while the posterior bank forms the postcentral gyrus (primary somatosensory cortex). The animation progressively clarifies this boundary by moving along the sulcal course and letting the viewer appreciate its depth and curvature relative to adjacent gyri. A key landmark. Clinically, the central sulcus anchors cortical localization when interpreting stroke syndromes, tumor mass effect, and traumatic contusions near the perirolandic cortex, where small shifts in lesion position can flip the deficit from weakness to sensory loss. Neurosurgical planning for resections in the frontal or parietal convexity often begins by identifying the central sulcus, then confirming primary motor cortex with functional mapping to protect hand and face representations located near the lateral aspect of the sulcus. Animated continuity helps because the central sulcus can be interrupted by bridging gyri and can be confused with the precentral sulcus or postcentral sulcus on limited views. Use this sequence in neuroanatomy teaching to orient learners to lobar boundaries and to introduce the motor homunculus and sensory homunculus along the precentral and postcentral gyri. It also fits well in neurology and neuroradiology materials that correlate surface landmarks with clinical deficits and with axial or sagittal MRI slices through the perirolandic region. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
