Description
Layered over the anterior chest and upper abdomen of a female child, the thoracic viscera sit deep to the ribs and pectoral soft tissues, with the trachea descending in the midline to the carina and the lungs expanding laterally into their pleural cavities. The heart occupies the middle mediastinum, slightly left of the midsagittal plane, with the aortic arch curving superiorly and posteriorly and the pulmonary trunk and great veins clustered at its base. Superficial landmarks such as the clavicles, manubrium, and upper ribs frame the mediastinal contents, while cervical nerves and major vessels track inferiorly from the neck toward the axilla. Pediatric anatomy reads differently. Child-specific relationships make this view practical for teaching and clinical correlation: the thymus (when included) often projects over the anterior mediastinum and can mimic cardiomegaly on a frontal chest radiograph, and the relatively short trachea and narrow subglottis explain why croup and foreign body aspiration present quickly. From an access standpoint, the proximity of the subclavian vessels and brachial plexus to the clavicle is a reminder of why central venous catheter placement and clavicular fractures carry neurovascular risk, and why pneumothorax is a recognized complication when the pleural dome rises above the first rib.
