Rendered in posterior anatomical position, a female child’s trunk is presented with a translucent integument so the superficial and deep back musculature can be read alongside the underlying viscera. Trapezius and latissimus dorsi span the posterior thorax and flank, with deltoid laterally at the shoulder and gluteus maximus forming the posteroinferior contour of the pelvis, while paraspinal muscle columns track vertically on either side of the spinous processes. Beneath these landmarks, the thoracoabdominal and pelvic organ mass is arranged relative to the vertebral column and posterior abdominal wall, with retroperitoneal structures such as the kidneys and proximal ureters positioned posterolateral to the great vessels, and the rectum descending in the midline posterior pelvis behind the urinary bladder and prepubertal uterus. Clinical teaching often hinges on the posterior relationships because many key structures are approached from the back or interpreted against posterior body wall landmarks: kidneys sit deep to the 11th and 12th ribs and adjacent to quadratus lumborum, and their segmental vessels trace patterns that matter in renal trauma and surgical exposure. A clean posterior map also supports correlation to axial CT and MRI, where students routinely confuse intraperitoneal bowel loops with retroperitoneal organs unless they anchor their orientation to the psoas, paraspinals, and the expected course of the ureters. Good orientation. Common use includes pediatric gross anatomy labs, clinical anatomy lectures on the retroperitoneum and pelvis, and figure support for surgical texts discussing posterior renal access or paraspinal infection pathways. It also reads well in patient education material that needs a back-based explanation of flank pain, renal injury, or posterior pelvic organ relationships.
