Seen from the anterior aspect of an adult female thorax, the paired mammary glands lie superficial to pectoralis major and the anterior thoracic wall, with lobules embedded in adipose tissue and converging lactiferous ducts that course toward the nipple and areola. Superior and deep to the breasts, the lungs occupy the right and left pleural cavities lateral to the mediastinum, while the heart sits centrally with its apex projecting inferolaterally to the left. A branching vascular network is rendered within the breast parenchyma, consistent with perforators from the internal thoracic (internal mammary) vessels medially and contributions from lateral thoracic and intercostal branches laterally, all positioned relative to the rib cage and sternum.
