Description

Rotating into an inferior view of the posterior skull base, the animation centers on the occipital bone and the condylar fossa (condylar fossa occipitalis), positioned superior to the occipital condyle and posterior to the margin of the foramen magnum. The paired occipital condyles sit anterolateral to the foramen magnum and form the articular surfaces for the superior facets of the atlas (C1), while the external occipital crest descends in the midline toward the external occipital protuberance on the squamous part. As the camera settles, the subtle concavity of the condylar fossa and its relationship to the condylar canal region are clarified against the surrounding exocranial landmarks. Small, but consistent. Clinically, this area matters whenever you need precise orientation at the craniovertebral junction. The condylar fossa and adjacent condylar canal (when patent) mark the course of the emissary vein connecting the sigmoid sinus to the vertebral venous plexus, a practical consideration in posterior fossa approaches and in planning occipital condyle screws where variant venous channels can increase bleeding risk. Showing the inferior surface in sequence helps learners distinguish the fossa from the jugular foramen and hypoglossal canal region, a common point of confusion on CT bone windows and in dry skull labs. Use it in gross anatomy and neuroanatomy teaching to anchor bony landmarks around the foramen magnum, and in neurosurgical or ENT education when introducing far-lateral exposure, occipital condylectomy corridors, or craniovertebral fixation planning. It also drops cleanly into radiology atlases illustrating skull base anatomy in the inferior projection. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
