Framed on the anterior thoracic wall, the adult male mammary region (regio mammaria) is delineated over the pectoral area, centered on the nipple and areola and lying superficial to the pectoralis major and its overlying fascia. Medially, the boundary approaches the parasternal line adjacent to the sternum; laterally, it trends toward the anterior axillary line over the lateral border of pectoralis major. Superiorly it blends with the infraclavicular and pectoral regions, while inferiorly it transitions toward the inframammary area over the upper costal cartilages and the anterior abdominal wall. Defining this region precisely matters because surface anatomy drives communication in clinical notes, breast symptom workups, and operative planning, even in men where normal breast tissue is sparse and pathology is often subtle. Gynecomastia, subareolar masses, and male breast carcinoma classically present in the periareolar portion of the mammary region, and accurate regional labeling helps distinguish lesions of the chest wall (pectoralis major strain, costochondral pain) from true breast findings.
