Description
Profile-lateral anatomy centers on the deltoid region of the shoulder in a Black adult female, with the deltoid muscle mass draping from the lateral third of the clavicle anteriorly, the acromion superiorly, and the spine of the scapula posteriorly to converge on the deltoid tuberosity of the proximal humerus. Superior contour follows the acromial arch, with the lateral humeral head and greater tubercle lying deep to the muscle belly. Posteriorly, the deltoid blends toward the scapular spine, while anterior fibers form the rounded anterior shoulder adjacent to the bicipital groove region. Clear surface anatomy. Clinically, this lateral view is the one most often used to teach safe deltoid intramuscular injection technique, where the target lies in the thick central portion of the muscle, roughly 2 to 3 fingerbreadths inferior to the acromion to reduce risk to the axillary nerve and posterior circumflex humeral artery as they traverse the quadrangular space and wrap around the surgical neck. The same surface landmarks guide assessment of anterior shoulder dislocation, where the normal deltoid roundness may flatten and the humeral head can become palpable anteroinferior to the glenoid, and they help orient exams for subacromial impingement and bursitis along the superior deltoid curve.
