Oral Region

Description

Captured in lateral profile, the oral region is centered on the upper and lower lips (labia oris) with the vermilion border and mucocutaneous junction accentuated by a bright blue coating. The oral fissure and labial commissure define the anterior opening of the oral cavity, while the buccal region of the cheek lies posterolateral to the lips and blends superiorly into the nasolabial fold. Inferiorly, the mentum and mandibular border frame the perioral soft tissues, with the submental contour transitioning into the anterior neck. Lateral views like this are the workhorse for teaching facial surface anatomy because they tie the aesthetic units of the lips to underlying functional anatomy, most notably the orbicularis oris and the perioral mimetic muscles that modulate lip seal, speech articulation, and oral competence.
