Seen from the dorsal aspect, the five pedal digits are arranged from the hallux medially to the fifth toe laterally, with the nail plates and dorsal skin creases marking the interphalangeal joints. Under the surface, the proximal, middle, and distal phalanges align in series (the hallux with two phalanges), meeting the metatarsals at the metatarsophalangeal joints just proximal to the toe web spaces. A blue color treatment overlays the dorsum of the forefoot and toes, drawing attention to the superior soft tissues where extensor tendons and dorsal digital veins course distally toward each digit. Skin tone is preserved proximally, emphasizing the localized highlighted region. Dorsal toe anatomy matters whenever you need to correlate surface landmarks with neurovascular and tendon structures.
