Description
Seen from a superior (dorsal) perspective, the distal phalanx of a male toe is presented with its flattened dorsal surface and the expanded distal tuft oriented distally. Proximally, the base of the distal phalanx bears the articular surface for the head of the middle phalanx at the distal interphalangeal joint, while the shaft narrows between base and tuft. Medially and laterally, the margins taper and then flare toward the apical region, reflecting the bony support for the nail unit and pulp. Dorsal morphology of the distal phalanx matters because it frames two frequent clinical problems: distal phalanx fractures and nail bed injuries. Crush mechanisms often split the tuft or propagate intra-articularly toward the distal interphalangeal joint, and knowing the orientation of the base and shaft helps when assessing displacement on plain radiographs or planning fixation with K wires.
