Description
Viewed from the anterior (palmar) aspect, the distal phalanges of the digits sit at the most distal end of each finger, distal to the middle phalanges at the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints. Each terminal phalanx shows its expanded distal tuft and the roughened palmar surface of the apical tuberosity, where the fibrous septa of the finger pad anchor into periosteum. The shaft tapers proximally toward the base, and the distal tips align in a gentle arc from the radial side (index) to the ulnar side (little), with the thumb’s distal phalanx broader and shorter than those of digits 2 through 5. Palmar detail at the distal phalanx matters because it links surface anatomy to grip mechanics and to common fingertip injuries. The distal phalanx tuft is the bony bed beneath the pulp and nail complex, so crush trauma often produces comminuted tuft fractures with subungual hematoma and nail bed laceration, even when deformity seems minor. The volar base and adjacent DIP region also help orient mallet finger patterns, where terminal extensor tendon failure is assessed relative to the dorsal base of the distal phalanx on lateral radiographs, but the palmar anatomy guides splinting pressure and padding.
