Description
Anterior soft tissues of the male temporal region are rendered with the auricle in profile and the auricular muscles visible beneath the skin. The auricularis anterior fans superior and anterior to the helix near the temporal fascia, while the auricularis superior sits more cranial, spanning toward the epicranial aponeurosis. Posterior to the auricle, the auricularis posterior tracks from the mastoid region toward the conchal cartilage, placing it lateral to the mastoid process and superficial to the attachments of the sternocleidomastoid. Fine intrinsic auricular fibers are suggested along the cartilaginous framework. Small muscles. This anterior perspective matters because most clinically relevant auricular motor innervation comes from the facial nerve, and the temporal and posterior auricular branches course in the same superficial plane that surgeons elevate in otoplasty, rhytidectomy, and temporal flap dissection. Injury or traction here can weaken the posterior auricular muscle response, a useful bedside and electrophysiologic adjunct when localizing facial nerve lesions. The view also clarifies how these thin, sheet-like muscles relate to the temporoparietal fascia, a key landmark for safe dissection over the superficial temporal vessels.
